Research brief: Scandinavian architecture

Scandinavian architecture

Nyhavn (which translates to “the new harbor”) is one of the most photographed attractions in Copenhagen and it is no wonder: the colorful houses, now mostly housing cafes and restaurants, is what gives Copenhagen its fairytale vibe.
At one end of the harbor is KongensNytorv (the king’s new square) and the memorial anchor, which commemorates the 1700 officers and sailors of the Danish navy, who lost their lives during World War II. On the other endis the Royal Playhouse and the newly built bridge (the kissing bridge) that connects Nyhavn with the Christianshavn area.

The bustling, compact island of Gamla Stan is the city’s old town, with cobbled streets and colorful 17th- and 18th-century buildings. It’s home to the medieval Storkyrkan cathedral and the Royal Palace, the king’s official residence. Stylish bistros serve New Nordic cuisine, while night spots include old-school pubs and chic cocktail bars. On adjoining Riddarholmen island, Riddarholmen Church hosts summer concerts.

Although it has a population of over 2.5 million people, Bergen still feels like a quaint mountain town. One of the best things to see in Bergen is the famous Bryggen, the colourful houses in Bergen. These buildings are great for an Instagram snap or for those wanting to check out the infamous Bryggen sites with your own eyes. That is, ff you haven’t already stumbled upon the old wooden buildings by accident while strolling around the harbourIt’s no secret that Norway can get cold – very cold. Being situated close to the Northern Sea and nestled between seven mountains, it has some unique weather conditions. Taking into account temperature and rain, the best month to visit Bergen is May.
